The Community Opportunity Shop

We did it!

Thank you for helping us raise a total of $10,993 in three weeks — surpassing our goal in this national grant challenge.

The Kennedy Center's Community Opportunity Shop has been selected as a finalist in USA Today's "A Community Thrives" challenge grant. We surpassed our $10,000 goal by April 12, keeping us in the running to win $100,000 to create a one-stop community shop and cafe.

Grant recipients will be announced by June 3, 2019.

The Kennedy Center’s Community Opportunity Shop will be a destination, where each new day will bring new, exclusive treasures to discover. Shop upcycled clothing, furniture and one-of-a-kind artwork and then connect with friends over a cup of coffee in our café.

Beyond a transformative retail experience, this social enterprise will challenge perceived limitations and recognize the unique skills, talents, and expertise of people with disabilities and those with barriers to employment.

The Community Opportunity Shop will create 40 local jobs, provide hands-on career skills training and serve as an interactive showcase for our neighborhood artists.  The Shop represents the power of diversity in enhancing the fabric of our local community.

The Challenge has ended, but please visit our Crowdrise Page for more information on the project.
